Kendall Marshall’s dad nicknamed him “Butter” because he’s smooth and his play spreads it all around to the team. That really sums up his time at UNC. Marshall got the starting gig when Larry Drew wasn’t producing the way the coaching staff hoped for. Ever since that moment, the legend of Passfir5t was born.

Marshall led an overachieving Tar Heels team to the Elite 8 in 2011 and returned as a sophomore for Final Four aspirations. During the 2011-12 season, Marshall notched the fourth-best single season assist year since 1986.

The 2011-12 season was a tough one for the Tar Heels as they were prepped to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament to the Final Four. As a No. 1 seed, UNC took care of Vermont and Creighton in the opening weekend before being pushed to the brink by Ohio in the Sweet 16.

But that win over Creighton proved to be costly. Marshall suffered a wrist injury after a hard foul on a layup. He missed the rest of the tournament as Stilman White took over the starting spot.

UNC missed Marshall and it quickly showed. Despite White actually playing well vs. Kansas in the Elite 8, the Tar Heels couldn’t settle in their normal offense and would lose to the Jayhawks. A win would have set up a Final Four rematch with Kentucky.
