UNC Basketball: Tar Heels’ commit impresses recruiting analyst
By Zack Pearson
UNC Basketball’s lone 2020 commit earned some praise from a national recruiting analyst over the weekend
While the North Carolina Tar Heels might not be done adding to their 2019 recruiting class, the big focus is starting to shift to the 2020 class.
UNC has one recruit signed to their 2020 recruiting class, landing a commitment from four-star center Day’Ron Sharpe back in June of 2019. Sharpe got UNC off to a great start in the 2020 class and a building block for the future in the post. While there is still a long ways to go in this recruiting cycle, UNC is on track to have a big class.
As we continue to move through the evaluation periods with the AAU circuits, Sharpe is really starting to elevate his play on the court.
He most recently participated in the Hoop Group Southern Jam Fest last weekend and caught the attention of a national recruiting analyst for his play. Corey Evans of Rivals wrote on Sharpe’s performance and came away impressed with how he played.
Evans took it a step further and predicted that Sharpe would end up being moved up to a five-star recruit when the recruiting cycle is all said and done. Here is what Evans wrote on Sharpe and his future with UNC:
"You have to go back to the 2016 recruiting cycle to find the last time that North Carolina failed to secure a five-star talent. The Tar Heels will add another year to their streak thanks to Sharpe’s progression. Much fitter, more skilled and just as dominant on the interior, Sharpe was the best player in Hampton. He can snag 10 rebounds in his sleep and is the perfect center for Roy Williams’ big-man reliant system."
Sharpe is currently the No. 27 player in Rivals’ rankings and No. 7 at his position. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound center has plenty of time to raise his stock and earn that fifth star but performing well at AAU events is the first step.
With Sharpe committed, UNC is hoping that they can build up this 2020 class to another big one like they did with the 2019 class.
