The UNC baseball team dropped its weekend series to Pittsburgh, and lost three of four games to close out the week

After a promising 3-0 start to the week, and wins in eight of their last nine games, the North Carolina Tar Heels dropped three of four games and a weekend series to the Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Tar Heels put 10 runs on the board in their loan victory over the Panthers, but mustered just nine combined runs in two weekend losses to Pitt and a Thursday night defeat to in-state rival East Carolina.

The loss to East Carolina in the teams’ only matchup of the season was a respectable one, given that the 9-5 defeat came to a 37-11 Pirates team that’s ranked No. 9 in the country. A series loss to Pittsburgh, though, is one that the Tar Heels would have liked to avoid this late in the season when they’re hoping to earn one of 16 NCAA Division I host sites for the upcoming postseason tournament.

At 7-20, the Panthers have the worst record in the Atlantic Coast Conference, sitting a game behind Virginia Tech for last-place in the Coastal Division. And after dropping Friday’s game by a score of 7-1, and the second-half of Saturday’s double-header 7-3, North Carolina fell to third-place in the Coastal behind Georgia Tech and Miami. The Tar Heels and Hurricanes (36-15) have better overall records than the Yellow Jackets (35-15), but don’t quite match Georgia Tech’s 17-10 conference mark.

North Carolina has a one-game set against High Point on Tuesday before closing out the regular season against crosstown rival N.C. State. The three-game series will be in Chapel Hill, and feature two programs that have won 16 conference games this season, and 36 or more overall. A sweep of the Wolfpack would help the Tar Heels build on their conference-best 29-5 record at home, as well as better positioning them in the NCAA Baseball Championship.
