The North Carolina Tar Heels will be well represented in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France this Summer.

As the United States Women’s National Team looks to win the tournament for the fourth time, they will have a handful of former Tar Heels on the roster. Earlier this week, the full roster for the USWNT was released and it included five Tar Heels who will hope to deliver a title in France on the 23-player roster.

Of those five, two players have World Cup experience including winning a title while three are rookies.

Tobin Heath headlines the list, making her third World Cup appearance with the National Team and was a part of the 2015 team that beat Japan 5-2 to win it all. She helped the USWNT avenge a loss to Japan in 2011 World Cup, where she was also on the roster.

Heath has had a decorated career so far, winning three National Championships at UNC before becoming a staple on the USWNT and having a World Cup title added to accolades.

Joining Heath is goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris who is making her second World Cup appearance for the USWNT. Heath was a part of the 2015 team that won in Canada and enters 2019 as the backup to Alyssa Naeher.

The three newcomers to the World Cup roster that played at UNC is Crystal Dunn (Left back), Jessica McDonald (Forward) and Allie Long (Midfielder).

Both Long and McDonald were a part of UNC’s 2008 team that beat Notre Dame to claim the National Championship. Both were also transfers into the program after playing the first few years of their college soccer at other schools.

Dunn had a decorated four-year career at UNC which wrapped up in 2013 as she won the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, was named a NSCAA All-American and First-team All-ACC for the fourth consecutive year.

The USWNT will open up their World Cup title defense against Thailand on June 1st in the Group Stage.
