UNC Basketball point guard Seventh Woods makes an announcement that he is transferring from the program via Instagram

With the North Carolina Tar Heels adding guards Cole Anthony, Anthony Harris and Jeremiah Francis in the 2019 recruiting class, they are expected to have a deep backcourt. The addition of the three recruits plus Leaky Black, Seventh Woods and Brandon Robinson returning, the playing time would come at a premium.

But on Wednesday, some more playing time opened up.

Point guard Seventh Woods announced via his Instagram that he will be transferring from UNC ahead of his senior season. He posted this message via his account:

"“My three years here at UNC has been nothing short of amazing. Two regular season championships, a National Championship and group of brothers that I would cherish for life. I wouldn’t go back and change any decision I’ve made but I do feel like it’s time for a change, with that being said I plan on finishing my academic and basketball career elsewhere. To the coaches, thank you so much for giving me an opportunity and helping me grow as a player and a man. To my teammates…. y’all know what’s up ?? I love y’all forever and will always cherish what we have been through and accomplished as a group. To any and everyone who has help me overcome the struggles throughout my college career, I am forever thankful. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and the best is yet to come ! – The pain you have been feeling, can’t compare to the JOY that is coming”"

Woods committed to UNC over South Carolina in November of 2015 as part of the 2016 recruiting class. He was a four-star guard out of South Carolina and was expected to be the next big thing at point guard for the Tar Heels.

But Woods struggled in his three years with UNC playing behind Joel Berry for two seasons and then Coby White just last season. He was still a part of the rotation but never grabbed that starting job.

Woods averaged 2.5 points, 1 rebound and 2.1 assists while shooting 41.9 percent from the field this past season for UNC. All were career highs for the guard.

With guards coming in and some returning, it would be hard for Woods to find some significant playing time. The move is probably better for the guard who will look to go to a program right away and play.

He also becomes the first true transfer out of UNC in about 8 years with the last being Larry Drew II in 2011. The Wear twins also transferred out of UNC in 2010.

With Woods leaving, it opens up another scholarship for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels. They are currently in the race for graduate transfer Christian Keeling who will announce his decision in May, as well as Justin Pierce.
