UNC Football: Class of 2021 QB target stands out at Under Armour camp
By Zack Pearson
A 2021 UNC Football target was the recent standout at a Under Armour camp and is starting to gain some national attention
Luke Maye left his legacy at the University of North Carolina, reaching two Final Fours, winning a National Championship, earning multiple academic awards, making the All-ACC First Team and hitting one of the biggest shots in program history vs. Kentucky. Maye was a special player for Roy Williams and his staff, to say the least.
Now Mack Brown is in pursuit of Maye’s younger brother as he hopes the family legacy continues with the football program.
It’s no secret the Tar Heels have been recruiting Drake Maye, the younger brother of Luke and son of former UNC quarterback Mark Maye. UNC has shown significant interest in the prospect who is one of the top quarterbacks in the 2021 class. Maye has been on campus numerous times for camps and to watch his brother Luke play for the basketball team.
UNC is one of 12 offers for Drake ranging from programs like Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia and N.C. State among others. While he’s still a few years away, he’s going to be heavily recruited until he makes his decision.
With the Tar Heels keeping tabs on him, Maye continues to shine in offseason camps.
The four-star quarterback prospect recently participated in the Under Armour All-America camp last week in Ohio and he left some scouts impressed. Bill Greene of 247 Sports wrote a piece on Maye and his performance, saying Maye was the most impressive quarterback in attendance:
"Maye, 6-foot-4, 200-pounds, featured a strong and accurate arm throughout the Under Armour camp and was the most impressive quarterback in attendance according to 247Sports. He made every throw he was asked to make and delivered a very catchable ball."
With his performance, Greene noted that Maye has earned an invitation to the Future 50 event in Florida next January. The Future 50 is a premier camp for the nation’s top players.
Maye is quickly starting to gain some national attention for his play. If he keeps it up at this rate, he will be climbing the recruiting rankings.
UNC does have ties to Maye in his family, giving them at least a little bit of an advantage but it could be hard to pull him away from other top programs.
