Charleston Southern graduate transfer Christian Keeling set to visit UNC basketball program on Tuesday night

Charleston Southern graduate transfer Christian Keeling is set to visit the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 175-pound guard announced his intent to leave Charleston Southern in late March, and was contacted by upwards of two dozen schools, including Arizona, Auburn, Cincinnati, Gonzaga and Texas Tech. Last week, though, Keeling eliminated most of the programs recruiting him, naming a list of five finalists that consists of Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, N.C. State and Purdue.

Now, operating on what we assume to be a fairly tight time frame, Keeling is working on drawing closer to a decision. He’s already made trips to Clemson and Georgia Tech, and is planning a visit to see the Wolfpack in Raleigh in the month of May. But it’s the UNC coaching staff that he’ll be with beginning some time Tuesday evening, a meeting that’s taking place following multiple phone conversations and an in-home visit with Keeling and his family in North Charleston on Sunday night.

Despite being a natural 2-guard, the Tar Heels are recruiting Keeling as a combo guard that can both handle the ball, and hit shots from three-point range after losing the majority of their perimeter shooting from last season. He’s got speed to play in transition, but also excels in the half-court. He plays hard-nosed defense, too, and rebounds the ball exceptionally well for a player of his size.

Coming out of high school, Keeling was only considered a 2-star prospect in the class of 2016. In the three years since, though, he’s scored no less than 17.3 points per game, averaging a career-high 18.7 and 6.9 rebounds per game as a junior. He also shot 38 percent from beyond the arc last season, while converting nearly 78 percent of his free throw attempts.
