UNC Basketball: 5-star PG Cole Anthony picks North Carolina
UNC basketball program secures commitment from 5-star class of 2019 point guard Cole Anthony
In an announcement made on Tuesday morning, 5-star class of 2019 prospect Cole Anthony selected the University of North Carolina over Georgetown, Oregon and Notre Dame, putting an end to one of the most talked about and highly anticipated decisions in the world of basketball over the past year.
Sitting alongside his parents and ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, Anthony made the announcement live on “Get Up”, stating that his relationship with UNC head coach Roy Williams and assistant coach Hubert Davis, along with the family atmosphere he felt in Chapel Hill, were some of the prevailing factors that helped him come to his final decision.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Anthony is the son of former UNLV star and national champion, Greg Anthony, who played 11 seasons in the NBA for the Knicks, Grizzlies, SuperSonics, Trailblazers, Bulls and Bucks. Anthony is currently finishing his senior year at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia before enrolling at North Carolina in the coming weeks.
Anthony is known for being an explosive guard with a quick first step that finishes well in transition, as well as in the paint. He’s terrific with the ball in his hands, and can create his own shot, whether it be at the rim or in the mid-range. He’s also greatly improved his effectiveness as a three-point shooter, and plays tenacious defense on the opposite end of the court. His speed, athleticism and basketball I.Q. make him a dangerous player both on offense and defense.
Prior to his decision, North Carolina was a 93 percent favorite to receive Anthony’s commitment according to his 247Sports Crystal Ball. Anthony joins 5-star center Armando Bacot and 4-star point guard Jeremiah Francis as members of the Tar Heels’ 2019 recruiting class, which moved up from 50th to 14th thanks to their latest commitment.
