UNC Basketball: Roy Williams watches this 2019 recruit on Thursday
UNC basketball coach stops in Cary, North Carolina on Thursday to visit class of 2019 forward
As the 2019 recruiting cycle comes to an end, Roy Williams and the North Carolina coaching staff are scrambling to fill a myriad of holes that are sure to leave the Tar Heels in a sub-optimal position next season.
Despite having a commitment from 5-star center Armando Bacot, as well as a likely pledge from top-5 prospect Cole Anthony in the next few weeks, the Tar Heels will struggle with both depth and star-power in their lineup. And at this point, they’ll have a difficult time just filling out a starting five when the college basketball season rolls back around in early November.
That’s what has the Tar Heels exploring all their options for reinforcements in 2019 whether it’s on the recruiting trail or on the transfer market.
Their latest target, Justin McKoy, is a former Penn State commit that asked for his release from the school a couple of weeks ago. The Nittany Lions granted McKoy’s request, allowing him to reopen his recruitment and search for a new home this fall.
Although he compiled a number of scholarship offers during his initial recruitment, they pale in comparison to the ones he’s currently receiving. Over the past two weeks, he’s heard from N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia and Wake Forest, in addition to North Carolina. He’ll be in Charlottesville on Friday to visit the national champion Cavaliers, but first got a visit from Williams and the Tar Heels on Thursday afternoon.
During the visit, Williams was impressed with what he saw from McKoy, and offered him a scholarship for next season. McKoy is one of four high school seniors that currently hold an offer from UNC, along with Anthony, Matthew Hurt and Precious Achiuwa.
McKoy is unranked by the staff at 247Sports, but has a national composite ranking of No. 396 in the country. He’s ranked 15th in the state of North Carolina, and No. 87 among small forwards.
