UNC Basketball: Walker Kessler hopes to visit Tar Heels
By Zack Pearson
A big recruiting target in the 2020 class updates his recruitment and hopes to take a visit to UNC sometime soon
As we approach the final two months of the 2019 recruiting cycle, there are still many players left uncommitted in the class. For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they will be keeping an eye on three prospects as they get set to make their decisions in the coming weeks.
UNC is still in the running for guard Cole Anthony, wing Precious Aachiuwa and wing Matthew Hurt. Adding even just one of those players would help boost a 2019 recruiting class that features Armando Bacot and Jeremiah Francis as the only two commits signed.
But with the focus on 2019 for now, head coach Roy Williams hasn’t forgotten about the 2020 class and neither have we.
The Tar Heels currently have center Day’Ron Sharpe as the lone commit in 2020, getting their class off to a good start. They are also in the running for a few top recruits as this could shape up to be Williams’ best class in a long time.
One of those recruits is five-star Walker Kessler out of Georgia, who has received significant interest from UNC and many other top programs.
Over the weekend during the Final Four, Kessler provided a key update about his recruitment stating that he will indeed stay in 2020 and won’t reclassify to 2019. Kessler spoke with 247 Sports recruiting analyst Evan Daniels about where he is at in his recruitment and revealed that he plans on taking some more visits.
Here is what he told Daniels about UNC:
"I do want to visit UNC eventually, I want to try and visit Auburn and Georgia is so close so I will probably take a couple more unofficials there."
Kessler has taken four official visits so far, making trips to Duke, Virginia, Michigan and Vanderbilt in his recruitment. He has yet to visit UNC but Williams has watched him play a few times. With a scholarship in hand from the Tar Heels, Kessler will at the very least make an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill and could potentially take an official before he makes his college decision.
He also told Daniels that UNC, Duke, Auburn, Georgia, Virginia and Michigan were the schools that are recruiting him the hardest.
