UNC Basketball: Jerry Stackhouse in talks with Vanderbilt
By Zack Pearson
Jerry Stackhouse is reportedly in talks to become the head coach at Vanderbilt after serving as an assistant coach in the NBA
Former University of North Carolina standout Jerry Stackhouse could be returning to the college game.
The current G-League coach is reportedly interested in taking the head coaching job at Vanderbilt University after the program fired Bryce Drew at the end of the season. The two sides are now reportedly in talks for Stackhouse to become the head coach.
After spending 18 seasons in the NBA, Stackhouse took a job as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors in 2015. He was then named the head coach of Raptors 905 in the G-League and lead them to a title in 2016-17, while being named the G-League Coach of the Year.
Stackhouse spent two years as the head coach of Raptors 905 before joining the Memphis Grizzlies as an assistant coach, a position he still holds.
But now it appears as if he’s headed back to the college game.
With talks heating up between two sides, it’s very likely that Stackhouse will be named the next head coach of the Commodores.
Stackhouse doesn’t have coaching experience in the college game but did run his own successful AAU program, Stackhouse Elite. He also was a mentor for current Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram, who grew up in the same town as Stackhouse.
Despite having the No. 13 overall recruiting class in 2018 headlined by five-stars Simisola Shittu and Darius Garland, Vanderbilt went 9-23 overall and 0-18 in conference play. Both Shittu and Garland suffered season ending injuries, derailing the Commodores season.
Neither is expected back for their sophomore seasons as they will likely head to the NBA.
If Stackhouse does get the job, it will be a big challenge for the former UNC standout. He will have the tough task of rebuilding the program and turning it around quickly.
