Richard Hurt, the father of 2019 UNC Basketball recruiting target Matthew Hurt, revealed a factor in his son’s college decision

Class of 2019 wing Matthew Hurt’s recruitment has been relatively quiet as we enter the month of April, where he’s expected to make his decision on April 19th. While he hasn’t officially trimmed his list, the four programs that have the best chance to land him are North Carolina, Duke, Kansas and Kentucky.

Hurt has taken official visits to each of those schools and will take another visit to Memphis this weekend.

While participating in the McDonald’s All-American Game festivities this week, Hurt has discussed his recruitment a little to reporters. Hurt says he still doesn’t know where he’s going as the April decision looms but many expect it to come down to Duke and Kansas.

Matthew’s father, Richard, spoke to Kentucky.com about his son’s recruitment and how Hurt fits in with point guards on the teams remaining on the list. Richard brought up how much that would play a part in his recruitment:

“If you’re a guy that doesn’t have the ball in your hands a lot, you want to know who’s going to be facilitating for you,” he said. “And if Ashton stays, obviously that’s a big checkmark in favor of Kentucky. The same thing could be said about Tre Jones at Duke. Coby (White) at North Carolina. Devon Dotson is probably going to stay (at Kansas).”

On that list, it’s very possible that 3 of those 4 players will leave after just one season at their respected programs. Dotson is likely staying at Kansas, which may play into the Jayhawks favor in terms of landing Hurt.

For North Carolina, many expect White to leave after one season although we will have to wait until the end of the tournament for the official word. Hagans is likely gone from Kentucky as well.

Then there is Jones. The Duke point guard has struggled offensively at times this season but he’s projected as a first-round pick. He could opt to leave after one season like his brother Tyus did after helping lead Duke to a title.

If White does leave, UNC will have Seventh Woods entering his senior year at point guard and also the possibility of landing combo guard Cole Anthony. It appears is if White staying could work more into UNC’s favor with not only next year’s starting lineup but possibly adding another five-star recruit to the roster.

It might not mean a whole lot right now in terms of UNC’s chances but it’s still something to monitor in Hurt’s recruitment.
