5-star UNC basketball target plans to take more visits before making a commitment

As the North Carolina Tar Heels make a strong push for the commitment of 5-star point guard Cole Anthony — while also making a bid for the program’s record 21st Final Four appearance — Roy Williams and company continue to work the recruiting trail, making their best pitch to some of the nation’s top uncommitted players.

One of those players, Precious Achiuwa, is a 6-foot-9, 220-pound small forward out of Montverde Academy in Florida who’s taken official visits to Kansas and North Carolina. Along with the two blue bloods and perennial powerhouse programs, Achiuwa is also receiving a lot of interest from Georgia, Memphis and UCLA, among others, and states that his recruitment is “wide open”, adding that he’s yet to narrow down his list.

In a recent interview with 247Sports recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, Achiuwa touched on his recruitment, and what it was like attending the UNC-Duke game during his official visit to Chapel Hill.

"“My recruitment is still open, we’re just going to go look at what’s the best option for me, that’s going to benefit me as a player,” Achiuwa said. “And whatever program that is and wherever I go, I hope to win, so it’s a combination of all of that. . . I haven’t cut my list down, and that’s the question I get asked the most. . .It was good. I think it was a good trip,” Achiuwa said of his official visit to UNC. “They played Duke and it was pretty much the biggest TV game of the year, in terms of college basketball, so that was a good game, a fun game to be able to see in person.”"

Given the time frame that Achiuwa appears to be working with — virtually none at all — and the pace that he’s taking his recruitment at, it looks like he’s waiting to see what the rosters of his prospective colleges look like once the season is over. Winning at the collegiate level seems to have a fairly high level of importance to Achiuwa, but playing time and TV exposure are bound to play a pretty big role in his decision, too.

His Crystal Ball hasn’t seen a lot of action over the past six months, mostly because people just have no clue where he’s going to end up, as he’s given very little indication as to whether or not he’s even leaning in a particular direction. For that reason, I don’t put a lot of stock into predictions for Achiuwa that are anywhere from six months to over a year old.

For the time being, though, Connecticut is the leader of the pack with 67 percent of predictions from analysts and insiders. St. John’s, Syracuse and Memphis each have 11 percent of votes.

North Carolina may not be the current darling of the media and analysts when it comes to the Achiuwa recruitment, but don’t count the Tar Heels out just yet. Riding their current season’s success, and set to have a mass exodus of talent this spring — but with a solid crop of incoming talent set to arrive on campus — UNC might be the perfect fit.
