UNC Basketball: 5-star UNC target Matthew Hurt sets announcement date
5-star UNC basketball target will announce college decision on April 19
One of the premier high school basketball players in the country has set a date to announce his college decision. Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are hoping that the talented prospect picks them.
Matthew Hurt, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound power forward out of Rochester, Minnesota, will announce his college choice on April 19; a decision that is believed to be down to just four schools: Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina. The Minnesota Golden Gophers — who his brother, Michael, plays for — were in the hunt for quite some time, but appear to have dropped off Hurt’s radar in recent months.
Hurt has taken official visits to all four of the blue blood schools, as well as spending time with each of their Hall-of-Fame head coaches. Considered the second-best power forward in the class, and the top prospect in the state of Minnesota, Hurt is one of the primary targets for all four of the powerhouse programs.
The 5-star big man was once thought of a strong Kansas lean, but most of the buzz surrounding his recruitment in recent months has shifted to Duke. The Blue Devils are now a 53 percent favorite to land Hurt according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Kansas is in second-place with 42 percent of the vote, and Kentucky is in third with just five percent.
The Tar Heels, who have been involved with Hurt for better than two years, have zero votes from the analysts and insiders on 247Sports, and are basically being given no chance of signing the highly touted big man.
North Carolina already has 5-star center Armando Bacot signed, as well as a good shot at getting Cole Anthony’s commitment in early April. But considering that the Tar Heels are losing seniors Luke Maye, Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams, and likely bidding farewell to sensational freshmen Coby White and Nassir Little, they’ll need all the reinforcements they can get.
Stick with Keeping It Heel for all the latest on the Matthew Hurt recruitment, and everything North Carolina basketball.
