UNC Basketball: Coby White earns national honors
By Zack Pearson
UNC Basketball freshman Coby White is honored for his big week as the Tar Heels earned two wins, including surviving on the road last Saturday
Coby White had another big week for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they went 2-0 with wins over Syracuse and at Clemson. The perfect weeks helped UNC keep pace with Virginia atop the ACC Standings as things will get interesting in this final week.
White was a big part of UNC’s success last week, scoring a total of 62 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing out eight assists and four steals in the two games.
He became the first UNC freshman to score 30-plus points three times in a season. For his efforts, White was named the ACC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, sweeping the conference honors.
But that wasn’t the only honor he would receive.
CBS Sports and the United States Basketball Writers Association have announced that White is the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Week, for this past week. Here’s what CBS Sports wrote on White:
"White is setting UNC records almost by the week, which is amazing in and of itself, but has been overshadowed by the other two notable frosh in the ACC this season. White’s back-to-back games with at least six made threes is a school record. He’s the only Carolina player to put up three 30-point games in his first season. Per UNC, “White now owns the third-, fourth- and fifth-highest scoring games ever by a Tar Heel freshman.”"
Each Tuesday, CBS Sports and United States Basketball Writers Association announce a Freshman of the Week and keep their “Frosh Watch” until the end of the season. From there, a winner of the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year will be awarded.
As it stands now, Duke’s Zion Williamson is No. 1 in CBS Sports’ power rankings followed by R.J. Barrett. White is on the list at No. 1 and would need a big end to the season to win the award.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Boston College on Tuesday night, followed by the rematch against Duke on Saturday in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels are still in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and another 2-0 week would help that cause.
