UNC Basketball: Latest Bracketology projections for March 1
By Zack Pearson
We take a look at the latest Bracketology for the UNC Basketball program as they head into March and the final three regular season games
The calendar has officially turned and we received the blessing of college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein that it is officially March. We are just over two weeks away from Selection Sunday and with the conference season winding down, it’s a great time to check in on the latest bracket projections.
For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they enter March as one of the hottest teams in college basketball. They have won 12 of their last 13 games, including beating Duke on the road and then Florida State at home. Their last win over Syracuse in the Dean Dome ensured them a double bye in the ACC Tournament.
With three games left UNC is in position to make a serious run. They will head on the road for a two-game stretch beginning Saturday at Clemson, then follow it up with a road game at Boston College next week before taking on Duke at home.
The Tar Heels still have a chance at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and winning out would certainly help.
UNC is likely going to be a one or two seed in the tournament unless they somehow go on a losing streak and then have an early exit in the ACC Tournament. It’s possible but even then, I think that would drop the Tar Heels down to the three line.
Being it’s March, let’s look at the latest Bracketology projections for the Tar Heels as they go into Saturday’s road game at Clemson:
Bracketology (Updated March 1) — No. 2 seed in Midwest. Joe Lunardi has officially updated his Bracketology as we have turned the calendar to March. The Tar Heels have been on the No. 2 line for weeks now with not much movement. In this version, UNC is listed as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region and would play their first-round matchup in Jacksonville vs. No. 15 Loyola-Chicago, who made a Cinderella run to the Final Four in 2018.
Bracketville (Updated Feb. 28) — No. 2 seed in Midwest vs. No. 15 Radford. Top 4 seeds: (1) Kentucky, (3) Marquette, (4) Wisconsin. Notable seeds: (9) Syracuse
Jerry Palm on CBS Sorts (Updated March 1) — No. 2 seed in Midwest vs. No. 15 Loyola-Chicago. Top 4 seeds: (1) Kentucky, (3) Houston, (4) Kansas. Notable other seeds: (7) Villanova, (9) Syracuse.
Brad Evan’s Big Board (Updated Feb. 27) — UNC as the No. 6 overall team. Evans ranks his teams on a big board rather than show matchups for a bracket. By this, UNC would be the No. 2 seed. Ahead of the Tar Heels are No. 5 Michigan State, No. 4 Duke, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 2 Virginia and No. 1 Gonzaga.
As noted above, the common theme is putting UNC on the two line in the Midwest Region right now.
The worst case scenario from any of the ones listed above is Jerry Palm’s. UNC could see a No. 7 seed Villanova in the Round of 32 and then if they make it to the Elite 8, could face a No. 4 seeded Kansas team guess where? Yep, Kansas City. Sound familiar?
These will almost all be updated daily and we will make sure to let you know of the latest for the Tar Heels as the season winds down.
