UNC Football: Chazz Surratt to change position for 2019 season
By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Football quarterback Chazz Surratt is making a position change, switching from offense to defense for the Tar Heels
We are just over a month from the Spring Football game for the North Carolina Tar Heels, where fans will get their look at the team in Mack Brown’s second stint. It’s only been a few months with Brown back but the excitement level is already high from fans.
There was no Spring game last season so the return of it in 2019 should only help continue to build the excitement.
When fans check out the new team for the first time this season, they will notice one big change in terms of the roster.
According to Inside Carolina, former quarterback Chazz Surratt will have a position change and is moving to outside linebacker. IC is reporting that Surratt made the move from quarterback to linebacker ahead of the Tar Heels’ first Spring practice this week.
After being recruited as a quarterback and a one-time Duke commit, Surratt started in 7 games for the Tar Heels in the past two seasons. He split time with Brandon Harris and Nathan Elliott in his redshirt freshman season and then missed most of 2018 after serving a suspension and then suffering an injury to his wrist.
On Tuesday, UNC broadcaster Lee Pace tweeted out this video of Surratt working out and he looks like he put on some serious muscle:
The position change for Surratt gives the Tar Heels some depth at outside linebacker and it also makes the quarterback competition more interesting.
Nathan Elliott returns for another season after starting the majority of the games for the Tar Heels last year. But joining him in the competition is four-star freshman recruit Sam Howell as well as redshirt freshmen Jace Ruder and Cade Fortin.
Both Fortin and Ruder saw playing time last season before getting hurt and there was some promise there. However, Howell enters Spring as the highly-touted in-state recruit that UNC pulled away from Florida State.
The quarterback battle will be a big one to watch this Spring.
