UNC Basketball: Tar Heels rout Seminoles in Chapel Hill

Tar Heels top Seminoles, remain atop ACC standings

Cameron Johnson and Nassir Little scored a game-high 18 points a piece, and North Carolina beat Florida State 77-59 in Chapel Hill on Saturday.

Johnson hit 6-of-13 shots on the day, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He also brought down 10 rebounds en route to his third double-double of the season. Little, on the other hand, scored his 18 on 6-of-11 shooting and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Senior forward Luke Maye chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season, while star freshman Coby White scored 10 points on a difficult 4-of-13 shooting game.

The Tar Heels hit 26-of-61 shots against the Seminoles for 42.6 percent shooting on the game. They knocked down 7-of-20 shots from beyond the arc and 18-of-25 from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Seminoles by 15 boards, and committed just 10 turnovers for the game.

Florida State was led by senior guard David Nichols, who scored 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting. He hit all four of his shots from three-point range, and connected on 4-of-6 free throw attempts. Leonard Hamilton’s squad hit just 30 percent of their field goal attempts on the game, and 32 percent from deep. They did manage a 13-of-16 mark from the free throw line, and recorded assists on 13 of 18 buckets.

North Carolina has now won back-to-back games against ranked opponents after beating No. 1 Duke and No. 16 Florida State over the past four days. The Tar Heels are now 22-5 on the season, and tied for first-place in the ACC with an 11-2 record. They’ll take the court next on Tuesday night when they welcome the Syracuse Orange to Chapel Hill for their only meeting of the season.

With the loss, Florida State falls to 21-6 overall, and 9-5 in conference play. The Seminoles will return home for a Monday night game against Notre Dame.
