Former UNC Football standout Marquise Williams made his Alliance of American Football debut on Sunday afternoon for San Antonio

The Alliance of American Football made a successful debut on Feb. 9 with two games being televised that Saturday and then two more on Sunday. The new league just completed its second week with games this past weekend and the reaction has been positive for the new league that was founded by Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.

On Sunday, a former North Carolina Tar Heel standout made his debut in the league as Marquise Williams appeared in San Antonio’s 37-29 loss to Orlando on Sunday in what might have been the best AAF game to date.

Williams took over for starting quarterback Logan Woodside during the second quarter. It was the first time Williams appeared in a game for San Antonio and it could signal more playing time ahead for the former UNC quarterback.

CBS Sports wrote on Williams replacing Woodside and what head coach Mike Riley has seen from him so far:

"While making such a change when Woodside had just led two scoring drives seems counterintuitive, Riley has maintained he’s liked what he’s seen from Williams in practice. And, sure enough, Williams showed off his wheels on some big-time scrambles to keep the chains moving. San Antonio’s initial drive with Williams at the helm ended in a 50-yard field goal."

Williams was only 2-of-4 for 3 yards passing in the game but did pick up 32 yards on his 3 rushes while at quarterback. He didn’t put up huge numbers that will stand out in the box score but getting reps could indicate that he will see more action moving forward.

Riley could go with a two-quarterback system for San Antonio depending on how things go in the future. The league is so new, it’s going to be interesting to see some of these offensive schemes in the coming weeks.

After playing four years at UNC, Williams was in training camp with the Green Bay Packers in 2016 before being cut. He then played in the CFL before joining San Antonio in the AAF.

Hopefully Williams can find more playing time for San Antonio and make an impact for the Commanders as the season continues.
