Cameron Johnson and Luke Maye are being recognized for their hot play so far this season as they were named to the Naismith Midseason Team

Although the North Carolina Tar Heels suffered a loss on Monday night to Virginia, ending their seven-game win streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference, they have been playing a lot better following their tough non-conference schedule.

UNC was able to rally off those seven-straight wins following a big loss at home to Louisville and have put themselves in position to get a double-bye in the ACC Tournament.

A big reason as to why the Tar Heels have found success recently is because of two seniors and how they have elevated their play.

Both Cameron Johnson and Luke Maye have come up big through the midway point of ACC play so far and now they are being recognized for it.

On Wednesday, Johnson and Maye were two of 30 players from 23 colleges to be named to the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy Midseason team by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The players are being recognized for their outstanding play at the halfway point and are up for the honor that will be awarded at the end of the season.

While there are 30 players that made the midseason cut, the list will be trimmed even more as the season goes on.

10 national semifinalists will be announced on March 4th and then the four finalists will be named on March 19th. Fans will have their chance to cast their vote for which player should win the award for the 2018-19 season.

The graduate transfer Johnson is averaging 15.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game for the Tar Heels this season. He’s shooting 50 percent from the field including 46 percent from the three-point line.

Maye is averaging 14.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in his senior year. He’s very close to averaging another double-double for the second-straight season. He did struggle against Virginia in Monday’s loss and will look to turn it around Saturday against Wake Forest.
