Luke Maye, Coby White help the Tar Heels sweep the weekly Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the week

The North Carolina Tar Heels enter Monday’s showdown with Virginia red hot and on a seven-game win streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC has been able to keep pace with Duke at 9-1 in conference play thanks to some good all-around play.

The Tar Heels just completed a 2-0 week with a rout of NC State on Tuesday and then capped it off with a thrilling overtime win over Miami on Saturday.

In that win, freshman Coby White and senior Luke Maye were instrumental in helping the Tar Heels come back and force overtime. Both also played a big role in the extra period as UNC grabbed control.

For their efforts, both White and Maye were rewarded by the ACC.

On Monday, the ACC announced that Maye was the Player of the Week for the conference while White took home Freshman of the Week honors. It’s the first time this season UNC has swept the weekly awards.

Maye had another big performance against NC State on Monday, leading all scorers with 31 points and 12 rebounds. He followed that up by scoring 20 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in the win against Miami.

His biggest points against the Hurricanes came with just over 10 seconds left in regulation, hitting a three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime.

But Maye might not have had that chance if it wasn’t for the heroic efforts from the freshman.

White finished with 33 points in the win over Miami, including 25 of those in the second half and overtime. He drained 7 three-pointers in the game, including one late to keep the Tar Heels in it.

It was the second time White has scored 33 or more points this season becoming the first Tar Heels freshman to score at least 33 points twice in a season since 2000.

The task gets a little tougher for the Tar Heels as they host No. 4 Virginia on Monday night in the Dean Dome. The Cavaliers two lone losses have come against Duke including losing by 10 on Saturday night.
