UNC Alumni in NBA: Harrison Barnes, Justin Jackson part of Kings-Mavs trade
By Zack Pearson
Harrison Barnes and Justin Jackson were part of a big Mavericks-Kings trade that happened on Wednesday night in the NBA
Earlier on Wednesday we rolled out our NBA Trade Deadline primer on which former University of North Carolina Tar Heels players could be on the move before Thursday afternoon. Little did we know that two of them would be involved in the same trade later that night.
Former UNC standouts Harrison Barnes and Justin Jackson were part of a trade between the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, just the latest in a flurry of moves ahead of the deadline.
Dallas agreed to send Barnes to Sacramento in exchange for Jackson and Zach Randolph on Wednesday night:
The deal actually happened during the second half of the Mavericks 99-93 win over the Charlotte Hornets at home. The move comes just a few days after Dallas acquired Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks in a package deal that included Dennis Smith Jr.
Barnes is averaging 17.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season for the Mavericks and has a player option on the $25M deal following this season. The plan is that Sacramento will try to lock him up long term.
As for Jackson, he is in his second season with the Kings after being selected in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft.
Jackson is averaging 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Kings.
Both teams are in a fight for the eighth and final playoff spot in the NBA’s Western Conference with Sacramento 1 game back and Dallas 4 back of the Los Angeles Clippers.
As of Wednesday night, four former UNC players have now been traded before the deadline including Wayne Ellington and Reggie Bullock.
