UNC basketball program says goodbye to 5-star shooting guard Anthony Edwards

Class of 2019 5-star prospect Anthony Edwards cancelled his official visit to the University of Kansas late last week, eliminating the Jayhawks and narrowing his list of finalists to four schools.

Edwards, seemingly intent on deciding between a quartet that included Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina, will now spend Saturday, February 9th — initially slated for his official visit to Kansas — in Tallahassee with the Seminoles.

Prior to that trip, though, Edwards was scheduled to be in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with the Tar Heels beginning on Monday, February 5th. Initially set to be on the UNC campus from Monday through Wednesday, Edwards was planning to attend the Tar Heels’ game against the N.C. State Wolfpack on Tuesday night.

That all changed on Sunday evening when Edwards confirmed that he had cancelled his trip to UNC; a trip that was set to begin just hours after a source informed 247Sports of the change in plans.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Edwards already took trips to Georgia and Kentucky, both of which are considered strong contenders in his recruitment. Florida State was at one point — and still is in some circles — considered the favorite in Edwards’ recruitment. Regardless of that, the Seminoles are still heavily involved in his recruitment, and remain a likely possibility in the eyes of most.

The Tar Heels, on the other hand, seemed to be a long-shot all along, despite making a strong push in recent weeks that landed them in Edwards’ top-4. They were still among the teams that he was considering, though, and hoping that a couple of days on one of college basketball’s most storied campuses would swing things their way.

They’ll no longer be afforded that opportunity, though, and it stands to reason that North Carolina has been eliminated from Edwards’ list of finalists. He did, however, confirm that his trip to visit Florida State is still scheduled to take place next weekend.
