Roy Williams, Bill self travel to Florida on Thursday to watch 5-star wing

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams traveled to Florida on Thursday afternoon to watch 5-star prospect Precious Achiuwa play, according to Adam Zagoria. Williams was joined at Montverde Academy by Kansas head coach Bill Self, who was also there to watch Achiuwa.

Achiuwa — along with 5-star UNC commit Armando Bacot — was named a McDonald’s All-American earlier in the day. He’ll likely be one of a handful of players to earn the triple crown of high school All-Star games when rosters for the Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit are announced.

Thursday was the second such meeting between Achiuwa and members of the North Carolina coach staff in recent weeks. Williams and UNC assistant coach Hubert Davis took a trip to Florida last week to meet with the top-10 prospect where they discussed his potential role on next year’s squad.

A 6-foot-9, 190-pound small forward, Achiuwa is one of the most coveted prospects in the nation. He’s known for his tremendous athleticism, size and strength, particularly for his position. He’s a good ball-handler, a great dunker, and a good shooter from all over the court. He’s also capable of guarding multiple positions, and blocks a lot of shots for a player his size.

The talented wing has interest from programs all across the country, including big name schools like Connecticut, Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oregon, Syracuse and UCLA.

Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans recently called North Carolina a long-shot in Achiuwa’s recruitment, stating that the Tar Heels may have too much ground to make up before a decision is made. They have, however, prioritized him of late, and continue to make a strong push at earning his commitment.

Achiuwa is the No. 9 prospect in the 2019 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the second-ranked player at his position, and the No. 2 prospect from the state of New York.
