UNC Basketball: Tar Heels run Hokies off the floor in Chapel Hill

North Carolina puts it all together against Virginia Tech in Chapel Hill

Coby White scored 27 points, and No. 11 North Carolina beat 10th-ranked Virginia Tech 103-82 in Chapel Hill on Monday night.

The sensational UNC freshman hit 9-of-16 shots from the floor, and 5-of-11 from three-point range. He also hit 4-of-5 attempts from the free throw line, while recording seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

In addition to White’s big game, fellow freshman Nassir Little had his best collegiate game to date. The McDonald’s All-American scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 2-of-3 from three-point range, and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. He also hauled in six rebounds, three assists and a steal off the UNC bench.

Luke Maye added 14 points, while Garrison Brooks and Kenny Williams scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. North Carolina’s leading scorer this season, Cameron Johnson, scored just eight points on eight shots against the Hokies. North Carolina moved to 15-4 on the season, and became the first ACC team this season to win five conference games.

Four Hokies scored double-digit points led by Ahmed Hill’s 20. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kerry Blackshear, Jr. each added 19 points, and Justin Robinson scored 17 for the Hokies, who dropped to 15-3 on the season and 4-2 in ACC play.

The Tar Heels beat the Hokies in just about every statistical category on Monday night including shooting percentage, three-point percentage, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and turnovers. The two teams combined to hit a phenomenal 30-of-33 from the free throw line, good for 91 percent on the night.

The Tar Heels will have a full week off before traveling to Atlanta next Tuesday for a matchup with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Hokies will have to recover quickly from the blowout defeat to UNC as they prepare for a Saturday showdown with upset-minded Syracuse.
