In his junior season, Brandon Robinson has expanded his range and provides three-point shooting for the Tar Heels

Key reserve and junior guard Brandon Robinson has played more and more this season due to his three-point shooting. Some University of North Carolina fans may have been confused as to why Robinson played so much in his two years in Chapel Hill.

It didn’t appear that Robinson brought many positives as he struggled in his first two seasons.

However, things have changed this year for Robinson; especially in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Going into Monday’s showdown with Virginia Tech, Robinson has made six out of nine attempted three-pointers including at least one made three-pointer in the Tar Heels first four conference games.

As expected, the only players with more made three-pointers in ACC play for the Tar Heels are Cam Johnson (12), Coby White (10), and Kenny Williams (7). It’s safe to say that Robinson is in good company.

Last year, Robinson only made nine three-pointers in 302 minutes played. And of those nine only four were made in conference play. Two years ago, Robinson only made seven three-pointers in 281 minutes played. At this rate, Robinson should make at least 18 three-pointers in conference play alone.

The biggest change in Robinson’s shooting is his confidence and his lack of hesitation. It might seem like something simple, but the ball goes into the basket when a shooter shots with confidence.

What does this mean for the Tar Heels? It means that UNC has another offensive weapon they can use to spread the court. It also means that Robinson will be ready to go if his number is called in the NCAA Tournament.

This just goes to show you that not every college basketball player is instantly important. Some take two or three years to understand the game on the collegiate level before they can perform to their ability.

If Robinson keeps this up, he could be a valuable option off the bench for the Tar Heels in the stretch run.
