University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams offers his answer on who is the greatest player of all time

It’s a debate that is as old as time. Well, okay maybe not that old but over the years the debate of Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James and who really is the greatest of all time has really heated up over the years.

Everyone has chimed in at one point or the other and no matter what side you’re on, it’s usually a fun debate.

But now, someone who is real close to Jordan has decided to chime in on it.

University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams was asked in his opinion who was the greatest basketball player of all time by the USA Today on Thursday and he offered up an answer that will make Tar Heels fans happy.

Here’s what Williams told the USA Today:

"“Michael Jordan is the greatest to ever play,” Williams told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. “LeBron (James) is in that conversation. He’s awfully impressive … It’s (also) hard to compare (Jordan) to centers like Wilt (Chamberlain) and Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar). But Michael is the best of all-time, in my opinion.”"

As you know, Jordan played his college basketball at North Carolina from 1981-1984 and hit the game-winning shot in the 1982 National Championship Game. The iconic shot helped deliver Dean Smith’s first national championship with the Tar Heels.

Jordan would go on to be drafted No. 3 overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 NBA Draft. In his long career with the Bulls, Jordan would win six NBA Championships, six NBA Finals MVPS, five NBA MVP’s and was a 14-time NBA All-Star.

Williams was fortunate enough to coach Jordan in college at UNC and was one of the assistants that recruited him. He was on the bench as an assistant throughout Jordan’s three years with the Tar Heels.

As for James, he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and has put together an impressive career in the NBA. He’s a three-time NBA champion, has won the NBA Finals MVP award three times and is a 14-time All-Star. James helped deliver Cleveland’s first NBA title by coming back from 3-1 and beating the Golden State Warriors back in 2016.
