Recruiting expert weighs in on Cole Anthony, and the latest on his recruitment

Still looking to make a splash in the class of 2019, Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are recruiting 5-star point guard Cole Anthony as hard as any player in recent history.

The 6-foot-3, 184-pound Anthony would not only help the Tar Heels make that splash, but he’d be an impact player — and likely starter — from day one in Chapel Hill.

A New York native and son of former 12-year NBA veteran Greg Anthony, Cole is one of the most highly regarded high school players in the nation. A terrific junior season at Archbishop Molloy — and a performance on the Nike EYBL circuit to match it — helped make that happen, and Anthony ultimately transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mount of Wilson, Virginia.

In late October, Anthony trimmed his list of finalists to just six schools, and that’s where it appears to be staying until the time of his commitment. That commitment, one that Anthony says will likely take place in early April, will come down to Georgetown, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon and Wake Forest.

Despite having a half-dozen schools on his current list, though, a number of recruiting experts — including 247Sports analyst Evan Daniels — believe that Anthony’s recruitment is down to just two schools.

"“It’s only mid-January and I still think we are a ways away from Cole Anthony making his college choice,” Evans said. “As of today, North Carolina would be who I would consider the frontrunner, although Anthony hasn’t ever said such thing publicly.”"

The other program in question, Oregon, has made a strong push for Anthony in recent months. Dana Altman and the Ducks are believed to have positioned themselves nicely in the Anthony recruitment, and should be considered just as strong of a suitor as the Tar Heels.

He’s the No. 3 prospect in the class of 2019 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the top player at his position, and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Virginia.
