UNC Basketball: Cole Anthony targeting April for decision?
By Zack Pearson
Class of 2019 five-star recruit Cole Anthony could make his decision in April around the Final Four according to his mother
The Cole Anthony recruitment has been an interesting one for the North Carolina Tar Heels over the past few months. The class of 2019 five-star combo guard has taken two unofficial visits and an official visit to UNC since August and there’s been significant interest shown by both sides.
Many recruiting analysts believe the Tar Heels are the favorites for Anthony and have been for months now, however they have warned us not to count out Oregon.
Anthony has taken a few official visits now, including Notre Dame, Oregon and Georgetown but it appears as if his recruitment could be down to just the Tar Heels and Ducks.
While his recruitment remains relatively silent in terms of letting info leak, we are going to have to wait a little longer for his decision. Anthony’s mother, Crystal McCrary McGuire, spoke to Adam Zagoria of Zag’s Blog over the phone on Thursday to provide an update to his timeline.
“We’ll probably announce around Final Four time,” Crystal McCrary McGuire said Thursday by phone. “You want to see how things shake out.”
Even with that information, there’s no concrete date set. It’s very possible Anthony waits to see who decides to go pro with the programs he’s interested in and makes a decision way after the Final Four.
It’s not unusual for recruits to wait as long as possible, including Kevin Knox who had interest in the Tar Heels a few years back when he made his decision in May.
Anthony has become a very important recruit for the Tar Heels in their 2019 class as they need to fill a void on the wing. Kenny Williams, Cameron Johnson and Luke Maye are all graduating after this season and the Tar Heels have just point guard Jeremiah Francis signed as the only wing in the class.
They do have five-star center Armando Bacot signed and he happens to be one of Anthony’s best friends. That could work in UNC’s favor as the two could want to play together in college.
For now, Roy Williams will continue on the recruiting trail hoping to land another wing to his class as he awaits the decision from Anthony.
