UNC Basketball: Anthony Edwards on Roy Williams usage of guards
By Zack Pearson
Class of 2019 recruiting target Anthony Edwards had some interesting comments on how Roy Williams uses guards in his offense
University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams is still putting together his 2019 recruiting class in Chapel Hill, having point guard Jeremiah Francis and center Armando Bacot signed.
Williams is still pursuing a few top players in this class including Cole Anthony, Precious Achiuwa and newly reclassified guard Anthony Edwards. Just a few weeks back, the Tar Heels made the cut for Edwards who is now a top 10 player in the 2018 class.
Edwards officially reclassified from 2020 to 2019 and gives UNC the chance to add another five-star recruit to their class.
While Edwards has been quiet about his recruitment outside of dropping his final five, he recently spoke to Rivals’ Corey Evans after the Chick-Fil-A Classic. Edwards discussed his recruitment and something interesting to say about Williams and UNC.
Here’s what Edwards told Evans:
"He (Roy Williams) lets his guards rock. Joel Berry and right now, Coby White, he lets his guards go to work and that is why I like UNC."
This sounds like pretty good news for the Tar Heels.
Edwards apparently loves how Williams lets his guards play in the offense, using the example of Joey Berry and now Coby White. The guard spot is very crucial in Williams’ offensive tempo of pushing the ball down the court, running fast breaks and even being a good shooter.
A player like Edwards could thrive in UNC’s system in all of those categories. Through the first two months of this season, we’ve already seen what White can do in his freshman year as he looks very comfortable with the basketball. White is an ideal point guard for this team and has really shown that so far.
With a rich guard history at UNC, Edwards could just be the next to fulfill that legacy. There’s a long ways to go in his recruitment but for now, this is certainly good news for the Tar Heels.
