With conference play quickly approaching, let’s take a look at five lineups that the Tar Heels could use against ACC foes.

A college basketball roster has a mix of guards, forwards, and sometimes centers. Some teams use three guards and two forwards, while other teams may use two guards, and three forwards. There’s really no “right” or “perfect” lineup; it just depends on the coach and the style of basketball he wants to play.

Coaches are also known to use numerous lineups depending on their team’s strengths and weaknesses. Each coach has a great understanding of their roster makeup, and what each player brings to the table.

Last season, it took UNC head coach Roy Williams most of the season to finally give in to the small ball starting lineup of Joel Berry, Theo Pinson, Kenny Williams, Cam Johnson and Luke Maye. At the time, Garrison Brooks, Sterling Manley and Brandon Huffman we not ready to be a part of the starting lineup.

It’s a known fact that Williams prefers a more traditional lineup, especially after losing to Texas A&M in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. That was the worst case scenario for last year’s squad; undersized against a bigger team, shooting less than 40% from the field and below 20% from beyond the arc.

When looking at the current roster, there are various lineups that could cause chaos for the rest of the ACC. How many starting lineups can be used this season, and to what varying degrees of success? There’s only one way to find out, and that’s what we’re analyzing today.
