5-star shooting guard Anthony Edwards trims list of schools to 5

The North Carolina basketball program got some good news on Friday morning when one its top targets in the class of 2019 named the Tar Heels to his reduced list of finalists.

Anthony Edwards, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound shooting guard out of Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta, Georgia, trimmed his list of eight schools down to just five, and North Carolina was among the programs to make the cut.

Along with the Tar Heels, Edwards named Florida State, Georgia, Kansas and Kentucky to his list, eliminating Duke, Michigan State and UCLA in the process.

It wasn’t surprising to see hometown sweetheart Georgia make the list. Nor was it a shock that he included Florida State, who many believe is the clubhouse leader at this point. UNC head coach Roy Williams — who was in attendance for Edwards’ 27-point performance on Thursday — has been putting in a lot of face time with Edwards in recent weeks, earning the Tar Heels a spot among the elite prospect’s top-5.

"“Carolina, Roy Williams lets his point guards play, and Michael Jordan went there,” Edwards told 247Sports’ Evan Daniels."

North Carolina fans, for one, will be thrilled to see his exclusion of Duke on the list. Michigan State and UCLA, the other two programs eliminated from contention on Friday, were the two schools farthest from his home in Atlanta.

Edwards, who is currently at the Chick-fil-A Classic in Richland County, South Carolina, informed 247Sports of his decision to trim the list, and who the finalists were.

After reclassifying from the 2020 class to 2019, Edwards is the No. 4 prospect in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the No. 1 player at his position, and the top prospect from the state of Georgia. Of the 10 Crystal Ball projections tallied on the site, eight are in favor of the Florida State Seminoles.
