UNC Basketball: Tar Heels announce contract extension for Roy Williams
University of North Carolina extends Roy Williams’ contract through 2027-28 season
Roy Williams and the University of North Carolina have reached an agreement on an eight-year contract extension that will keep the three-time national title-winning coach in Chapel Hill through the 2027-28 season.
The 2006 Naismith Hall-of-Fame inductee has won three national championships — 2005, 2009 and 2017 — since returning to Chapel Hill in 2003. He’s got a record of 432-128 in 16 years with the Tar Heels, and won the ACC regular season title eight times; more than any other coach in the conference during that span. His teams have won the ACC Tournament championship three times, and been runner-up on five occasions.
Williams is the only coach in college basketball history to win 350 or more games with two different programs. In his case, he’s won more than 400 games at both Kansas and North Carolina, and is now just two victories shy of 850 total.
His teams have finished in the top-10 of the final Associated Press poll 10 times, including each of the last three seasons. He’s also the namesake for the Tar Heels’ home court at the Dean Smith Center, which was tabbed Roy Williams Court prior to the start of the 2018-19 season.
"“I’m grateful and humbled in the University’s continued faith in my leadership of the basketball program,” Williams said in a press release. “When I coached at Kansas my contracts with Nike and our media partner were private, and UNC respected and honored that for 15 years. However, times have changed and understanding the environment that college basketball faces now, Chancellor Folt, Bubba (Cunningham) and I agreed the correct and proper thing would be to disclose those terms.”"
The University of North Carolina announced a number of other contract extensions on Wednesday morning according to the school’s official web page, and they are as follows:
• contracts and/or contract extensions with 11 head coaches, including Williams’ extension;
• personal service contracts for four head coaches with Nike;
• a 10-year extension for Carolina Athletics with Nike;
• and a 12-year extension for the department with Learfield Communications.
The school will be announcing contract extensions for women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance, baseball coach Mike Fox, women’s lacrosse coach Jenny Levy, women’s tennis coach Brian Kalbas, men’s tennis coach Sam Paul, men’s soccer coach Carlos Somoano, and wrestling coach Coleman Scott.
