UNC Football: Tar Heels complete big recruiting weekend
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Football program picked up six new recruits in their 2019 class after hosting a recruiting event over the weekend
On Thursday we told you about a big recruiting event for the North Carolina Tar Heels that was scheduled for this past weekend as the program welcomed several targets on campus.
This was new head coach Mack Browns first real big recruiting moment as the Tar Heels were able to take advantage of having recruits on campus despite the snow storm. When it was all said and done, the Tar Heels improved their 2019 recruiting class and things are starting to look up.
UNC was able to land a total of six commitments for their 2019 recruiting class over the weekend including a couple of big flips.
The biggest commitment came from four-star in-state receiver Khafre Brown, who pledged his commitment on Saturday while on the visit. The speedy Brown has been a big target for the program for months now and being able to land the No. 8 prospect in the state of North Carolina is huge.
It’s something that Larry Fedora struggled in doing, missing out on a ton of top talent in the state of North Carolina.
Along with Brown, the Tar Heels also added another three-star wide receiver that was actually a verbal to the program before. UNC was able to flip receiver Emery Simmons from Indiana earlier in 2018 before seeing him flip to Penn State. But over the weekend, the buzz was that Simmons was close to flipping back to UNC with the new hire.
That’s exactly what happened on Saturday when Simmons flipped back to the Tar Heels, giving them another four-star wide receiver.
The two receivers are now the highest-graded players in UNC’s 2019 recruiting class. Brown currently ranks No. 218 overall and Simmons is No. 516.
Along with the two receivers, the Tar Heels were able to land commitments from defensive end Kristian Varner, receiver Justin Olson, offensive tackle Wyatt Tunall and punter Ben Kiernan.
Of those four, Varner might just be the most impressive one. The three-stars end had his Crystal Ball prediction for 100% to Louisville but in the end it was UNC that won him over on the visit over the weekend. Verner turned down offers from a few SEC schools to go to UNC and could end up being one of the better players in this class.
While there are no big five-star recruits, this is still a good start for Brown on the 2019 class.
There’s not much expectation for the 2019 class right away as Brown got a late start on it but being able to sway some recruits over the weekend was big. The 2020 recruiting class will likely be the one that determines his fate but this one could be a bonus for him.
