UNC Basketball: Roy Williams watches elite recruits on Saturday
Roy Williams among the coaches watching elite prospects on Saturday
Roy Williams and the Tar Heels have missed out on a number of elite prospects over the past few months, but that hasn’t stopped the Hall-of-Fame head coach from hitting the recruiting trail with the same level of enthusiasm as always.
Williams was among the coaches in Washington D.C. on Saturday attending the ARS Rescue Rooter DC National Hoopfest to watch some of the nation’s brightest young players. It was there that he watched UNC commit Armando Bacot, as well as some of the top players in the 2019 and 2020 classes.
Perhaps the player receiving more fanfare than any other was Anthony Edwards, a consensus top-five prospect across all recruiting outlets. Edwards is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound shooting guard out of Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta, Georgia who recently reclassified to the class of 2019.
Despite speculation that Edwards might make the jump to the NBA G-League before entering the draft next year, the five-star shooter has remained adamant about attending college in 2019. According to Rivals’ Corey Evans, Edwards scored 27 points on Saturday in front of Williams, Georgia head coach Tom Crean and an assistant coach from Kentucky.
Williams also watched five-star class of 2020 prospect Jeremy Roach, a 6-foot-2, 165-pound point guard out of Fairfax, Virginia that’s currently considered a Kentucky lean. A junior at Paul VI Catholic, Roach is the 15th-ranked prospect in the class. He’s the No. 1 point guard, and the top player in the state of Virginia.
Another player in attendance on Saturday that Williams has been involved with is 2020 big man Hunter Dickinson. The junior center from DeMatha Catholic is a 7-foot-2, 255-pound center who’s being recruited by just about every big name program in the nation.
And although he hasn’t received an offer from North Carolina yet, Williams has watched him play on a number of occasions, and is expected to at some point. Current predictions favor Notre Dame to land the talented big man, but there is still a lot of time remaining in his recruitment.
Look for Williams to remain heavily involved with each of these players, as well as a number of other elite prospects in the classes of 2020 and beyond.
