The University of North Carolina Tar Heels Women’s field hockey team won another national championship as they beat Maryland on Sunday

Add another national championship to the list for the University of North Carolina and this one came in the form of a perfect season.

The Tar Heels’ women’s field hockey team captured their seventh national championship on Sunday afternoon, topping the Maryland Terrapins 2-0 to complete the undefeated season in 2018. All seven UNC national championships in women’s field hockey have come under legendary head coach Karen Shelton as she just completed her 38th season with the program.

UNC got on the board in the 21st minute when junior Megan DuVernois tipped in a pass on a breakaway started by Erin Matson down the left sideline.

The goal would prove to be the game-winner for the Tar Heels.

Just 10 minutes later, the Tar Heels were able to add another goal to cushion their lead when Matson grabbed the rebound on her own shot and put it in the cage. In total, UNC had 8 shots including 5 on goal.

UNC’s goalie Amanda Hendry finished with five saves, tying a season high and defender Morgan Goetz had a defensive save.

The win moved UNC to 23-0 and completed the third unbeaten season in program history.

Coach Shelton commented on the win following the game:

"“It wasn’t a pretty game, particularly the second half,” Shelton said. “I think Amanda Hendry played awesome. We haven’t had a goalkeeper play as well in a Final Four in a long time. She helped get the shutout today and secure the win in the second half.”"

The Tar Heels had four players finish on the All-NCAA Tournament team which was announced after the match. Ashley Hoffman and Eva van’t Hoog joined Hendry and Matson on the All-NCAA Tournament team, picking up the prestigious honor.

UNC is now 82-14 over the past four seasons with a national championship and three ACC Championships.
