5. The Tar Heels will be better in March than they are in November

Tuesday night’s game against Wofford was entertaining, but it wasn’t perfect. In fact, it was far from perfect. And, at times, it wasn’t very pretty to watch. But did we see anything that would make us believe that this North Carolina team won’t be ready for a deep NCAA Tournament run in March?

Roy Williams-coached teams are always better in March than they are in November, and the 2006 Hall-of-Fame inductee has never put a terribly strong emphasis on winning games before conference play.

He tinkers with his lineups, experiments with different rotations, and schedules a tough non-conference slate every season. He’s got no problem with losing games early in the season if it prepares his teams for the rigors of a challenging conference schedule, and a one-loss winner-take-all tournament that leaves very little margin for error.

Luke Maye looks better than ever. Kenny Williams and Cameron Johnson will provide North Carolina with the necessary perimeter play it needs. And Garrison Brooks’ progression may allow the Tar Heels to run with the traditional lineup that Roy Williams and company prefer. Throw in the team’s depth and star-studded freshman class, and the Tar Heels look like a program that could compete for a national title in 2019.

Only time will tell, though, and Keeping It Heel will follow the Tar Heels throughout the entirety of the 2018-19 season.
