The UNC Basketball program makes the early cut for the top point guard in the 2020 class on Thursday night

One of the top point guards in the 2020 recruiting class has made an update on his recruitment Thursday night.

Five-star Jeremy Roach officially trimmed his list down to four teams Thursday, a significant move in his recruitment despite it still being early. The Fairfax, Virginia native announced that he is down to Duke, North Carolina, Villanova, and Kentucky, four blue bloods of college basketball.

Roach is ranked as the No. 16 overall player in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings as a five-star recruit and the best player in the state of Virginia and the best player at his position.

For UNC, they entered the race for Roach a little later than some of the other teams as head coach Roy Williams officially offered the point guard on September 13th.

Williams had the opportunity to watch Roach in the Summer EYBL circuit as he played for Team Takeover, averaging 6.6 points, 3.1 assists, 2.5 rebounds during the championship run. Roach has really elevated his game, as you can see by the rankings, and has been a part of Team USA Basketball for three years.

Roach hasn’t taken any official visits in his recruitment just yet but he is expected to go on an unofficial visit to Villanova this weekend.

At this stage in his recruitment, we shouldn’t expect Roach to take those official visits anytime soon. Rather, he likely will take them following his junior year of high school basketball.

With four teams on his list, it’s very likely UNC will get an official visit and have their chance to make an impression.

As for where Roach fits in this program, the Tar Heels could have a spot open at point guard for him in 2020. Guard Coby White likely won’t stay more than two seasons at UNC and if they land Cole Anthony, it appears that he will be a one-and-done.

UNC would love to pair a point guard like Roach with their lone verbal commitment of four-star center Day’Ron Sharpe, who offered his verbal in June.

There’s still a long way to go in Roach’s recruitment so make sure to check back with Keeping It Heel for the latest.
