UNC Football: Tar Heels players team up for Hurricane Florence relief efforts
By Zack Pearson
UNC Football players took it upon themselves to collect donations, including their own money, for Hurricane Florence relief effort
The University of North Carolina decided to postpone last Saturday’s home opener against UCF due to Hurricane Florence making landfall on the state. The Hurricane came through the states of North Carolina and South Carolina last week and has since moved out, leaving feet of rain, damage and a death toll of at least 37 people.
While we love sports, sometimes these things have to take a backseat to whats going on in the real world whether we like it or not.
Following the events of last week, the North Carolina Tar Heel Football team decided to take action and help raise money and accept donations for those who were affected by the natural disaster.
According to GoHeels.com, the UNC Football program is trying to help in any way they can including filling up a semi-truck with food and supplies for those in the area. Head coach Larry Fedora contacted Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham regarding ways the team could help out and the two came to a solution of using the 18-wheel equipment truck.
On Tuesday morning, the team accepted donations including pop-top canned goods, non-perishable food items and more to help deliver to the areas hit the hardest from the Hurricane.
The involvement continued throughout this week and on Sunday the players started to take an action of their own.
In total, 85 UNC Football players donated $15 meal stipends of their own to former Tar Heels linebacker Kevin Reddick’s GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his hometown of New Bern.
The total amount was $1,275 going towards supplies for New Bern:
While the Tar Heels return to the football field on Saturday for the home opener against Pitt, the destruction from Hurricane still remains as a lot of the state was impacted.
Even if UNC beats Pitt for their first win of the college football season on Saturday, their biggest win of the year may have come this past week.
Make sure you give those players a standing ovation if you’re at Kenan Memorial Stadium Saturday as the game starts. They deserve it.
