UNC Basketball: Tar Heels’ uniforms top Sports Illustrated list
By Zack Pearson
Sports Illustrated ranked the UNC Basketball uniforms tops in all of college basketball with their updated rankings last week
We are just 50 days away from the official start of the 2018-19 college basketball season with practices beginning later in September. After waiting months for the season to begin, any news regarding college basketball is noteworthy.
Even if it’s rankings.
Last week, Sports Illustrated continued their countdown to the new season by revealing a ranking of the best college basketball uniforms in the country. The publication went through all Division I uniforms and revealed the Top 10 with a special article.
To no ones surprise, not only did UNC make that top 10 but they finished No. 1 on the list beating out a few Blue Blood programs.
Sports Illustrated named the Tar Heels No. 1 as they beat out UCLA, Kansas, Duke and Villanova among others on the list. Here’s what they had to say about the Tar Heels uniforms:
"The Tar Heels cruised to the top spot in this ranking as the SI staff’s clear favorite uniform in college hoops. The Carolina blue-dominated unis are a staple of the sport, and the argyle stripe down the side of both jerseys adds a unique touch. Along with the rest of the event’s participants, UNC’s uniform got a new look (above left) at last year’s PK80 Invitational: Nike opted for all black letters and numbers on top of solid Carolina blue, with black argyle on the right side."
Something to note is that Nike and Jordan Brand dominated this list. UNC is one of three Jordan Brand sponsored jerseys in the Top 10. Including Jordan Brand, which is an umbrella under Nike, the SWOOSH had six of the best uniforms in the Top 10.
Under Armour had one with UCLA and adidas had three with Indiana, Kansas and Miami all in the Top 10.
All bias aside, we can’t disagree with the rankings. That Carolina Blue is a staple in college basketball and the argyle finish on the side is just an extra added touch. Whether UNC is wearing the Carolina Blue or White uniforms, it’s always noticeable on the court.
As for the upcoming season, UNC will begin practicing at the end of September as they begin their preparation. They will host their annual “Late Night With Roy” event on September 12th and the first game of the season is at Wofford on November 6th.
