UNC Basketball: Tar Heels’ point guard targets climb Rivals’ rankings
By Zack Pearson
Two UNC Basketball recruiting targets have moved up in the latest Rivals’ rankings released earlier in the week
Roy Williams has made it clear he’s hoping to add another point guard in his 2019 recruiting class despite having a verbal from Jeremiah Francis.
When Francis offered his verbal back in August of 2017, the Tar Heels were off to a good start for their 2019 class. The Tar Heels would add five-star center Armando Bacot just a year later in August 2018 and now Williams has big plans for this class.
Williams has offered Cole Anthony who is quickly becoming one of the top players in this class and he’s starting to show some major interest in the Tar Heels. After missing out on Tre Mann, Williams then offered California point guard Boogie Ellis.
With both players receiving offers, they are high on UNC’s recruiting board and Williams is hoping to land at least one.
On Wednesday, Rivals released its updated player rankings for the 2019 class and both Ellis and Anthony are high on that list.
Anthony tops the list, coming in at No. 1 among all point guards in the 2019 class beating out Tyrese Maxey who is verbally committed to Kentucky. Ellis moved up in the rankings thanks to his stellar play in the open evaluation periods. The San Diego native is now ranked No. 8 among all point guards in the class and is a Top 50 player.
Both Ellis and Anthony have visits lined up for the Tar Heels and both announced them just last week. Anthony will be on campus September 28th and Ellis will be in Chapel Hill on October 12th for Late Night With Roy.
UNC has been consistent in Anthony’s recruitment for a while now, watching him any chance they could get. While that was the case for the five-star guard, they recently jumped in on Ellis’ recruitment and have made him a new priority.
It’s going to be tough pulling Ellis out of the West Coast so the more likely option is pursuing Anthony hard. Keep an eye on both situations during the next few weeks to see if anything develops.
