Roy Williams has offered a new target in the 2020 recruiting class on Thursday night

University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams has been out on the recruiting trail this week with the start of the new contact period and has visited several prospects in the 2019 and 2020 classes.

Just a day after making a visit to IMG Academy in Florida, Williams made a move on a point guard in the 2020 recruiting class.

According to Tar Heel Illustrated, Williams officially extended an offer to point guard Jeremy Roach on Thursday night. The head coach called the recruit at his Virginia home and extended the scholarship offer, as the Tar Heels are now involved.

The five-star point guard is a top 20 player overall and the top point guard in the 2020 class according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings. Roach has a total of 9 offers so far including from Villanova, Duke, Maryland, Miami, Texas, USC, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Both Kansas and Kentucky are also showing interest in Roach.

With center Day’Ron Sharpe as the lone UNC verbal in the 2020 class, Williams is starting to work on his backcourt. Offering Roach shows that the head coach is still seeking another point guard for the future as he’s offered several in the 2019 class as well.

This past Summer Roach was a part of the USA Basketball U-17 team that won gold at the FIBA Under-17 World Cup. He played alongside some of the top recruits in the 2019 and 2020 classes.

His play in the open evaluation periods caught the attention of Williams and his UNC staff, and he was finally rewarded with an offer.

The Tar Heels are now joining the recruitment for Roach but there’s some tough competition. The Villanova Wildcats will be a team to keep an eye out in his recruitment and they aren’t far from where Roach lives and plays his high school ball at in Fairfax, Virginia. Duke has also told Roach he’s a top priority in this class for the Blue Devils.

It’s still early to tell where UNC is at in Roach’s recruitment as they just offered, but keep an eye on it over the next few weeks. Roach could take an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill this season.
