UNC Basketball: Tar Heels lock up official visit with top guard in 2019 class
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program has locked up an official visit from one of the top players in the 2019 recruiting class
University of North Carolina Tar Heels‘ head coach Roy Williams has a few big in-home visits set for this week as the new contact period officially began on Sunday. Williams is set to visit Matthew Hurt, Cole Anthony, and Vernon Carey Jr. this week for in-home visits.
But on Tuesday, Williams and the Tar Heels were able to land a big official visit from one of those players.
Inside Carolina’s Sherrell McMillan is reporting that five-star combo guard Cole Anthony has set his official visit date to Chapel Hill for UNC. Anthony will be on campus the weekend of September 28th according to Inside Carolina.
Anthony has not only climbed the recruiting rankings but he’s climbed UNC’s recruiting board as Williams has made him a high priority. He’s ranked as the No. 1 combo guard in the 2019 class and the No. 3 overall player according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.
The Tar Heels have watched Anthony several times during the open evaluation periods, most recently in July.
With Williams seeking to add another player on the perimeter, he’s begun to put a full court press on the combo guard. The Tar Heels already have point guard Jeremiah Francis and five-star center Armando Bacot signed, giving them the potential to have a huge class.
Speaking of Bacot, the recruit reacted to the news of Anthony visiting by posting this tweet:
Bacot offered his verbal to UNC in August and right after revealed that he would try to recruit his good friend Anthony to the Tar Heels. The two have developed a close friendship and there’s a possibility they could play college together.
While Anthony’s recruitment has been pretty quiet for the most part, he’s provided two significant updates recently. First he trimmed his list to 12 teams and now has an official visit scheduled.
Williams and the Tar Heels have to feel good about their chances on landing Anthony or at the very least being a finalist.
