The Milwaukee Brewers have claimed former UNC pitcher Matt Harvey and are looking to make a deal with the Cincinnati Reds to acquire him

After not being dealt at the MLB’s Trade Deadline at the end of July, former University of North Carolina pitcher Matt Harvey could have a new team after-all. Harvey was claimed on waivers Wednesday afternoon by a mystery team, leaving the option open for him being dealt.

On Friday morning, that mystery team was revealed.

Baseball insider Jon Heyman tweeted out that it was the Milwaukee Brewers that have claimed Harvey off of the waivers, hoping to add to their pitching rotation as they are right in the NL Playoff hunt.

The Brewers made the claim for Harvey on Wednesday and will have until 1:30 p.m. EST to acquire him via trade.

The Reds are currently in Chicago facing one of the teams the Brewers are chasing in the NL Central Division in the Cubs and Harvey was scheduled to start on Friday afternoon. If Harvey is traded, he will be scrapped from the starting spot and the Reds will have to go to a bullpen game like the Cubs are doing.

Another option for the Reds is letting the Brewers sign him and taking on the remaining money on his salary. Ideally, the Reds would like to get something in return for the right-handed pitcher.

If there is no deal, Harvey will remain with the Reds after they acquired him from the New York Mets back in May.

After being traded to Cincinnati, Harvey has rejuvenated his career. In 17 games started, Harvey has posted a 4.28 ERA and a WHIP of 1.207, his best numbers since the 2015 season where the Mets went to the World Series.

While Harvey isn’t the ace he once was, he still could be a key contributor to a team that is still in the playoff hunt.
