The UNC Football program honored former head coach Mack Brown in Chapel Hill over the weekend ahead of his enshrinement into the College Football Hall of Fame in December

Former University of North Carolina head coach Mack Brown will be enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame come December but over the weekend, he was honored in Chapel Hill.

It was announced back in January that Brown was part of the 2018 class and will be honored at the Dec. 4 ceremony in Atlanta.  The former head coach and ESPN analyst joins coaches Frank Beamer and Mel Tjeerdsma as well as players Trevor Cobb, Kerry Collins, Dave Dickenson, Calvin Johnson, Dana Howard, Ed Reed, Paul Palmer, Charles Woodson, Matt Stinchcomb, and Aaron Taylor as part of the 2018 class.

But before all of that happens, Brown had to make a stop in Chapel Hill where he spent a good portion of his career as a head coach. Brown spent the weekend in Chapel Hill and was honored for his upcoming enshrinement as the Rams Club played host to the legendary head coach with a weekend of festivities.

Former and current players, coaches and staff were on hand as the program celebrated Brown’s career that lasted 30 years in the coaching game with stops at Appalachian State, Tulane, North Carolina and Texas.

Brown spent 10 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels, turning the program around in the 1990 season as he put together a winning year. In 1992 Brown led the Tar Heels to a 9-3 record in 1992 including a 21-17 win over Mississippi State in the Peach Bowl.

UNC reached a Bowl game in each season from 1992-1997 under Brown and finished that ’97 season with a 10-1 record including a blowout win over Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl.

The head coach took the Texas job at the end of the 1997 season, ending a key era of UNC Football. While Brown was at UNC, he was able to pack the stands at Kenan Memorial Stadium despite the school being known as a “basketball school” with Dean Smith at the helm for the basketball program.

Brown went 244-122-1 over his career and left a legacy at every program he coached at over the years.
