The Tar Heels have officially made the cut in the top 8 for the top 2019 basketball recruit as James Wiseman has updated his list

James Wiseman has held on to the No. 1 ranking in the 247 Sports 2019 player rankings for weeks now as scouts have raved about the center’s game. On Saturday, Wiseman provided an update to his recruitment as we wrap up the final evaluation period of July.

The 6-foot-11 center out of Memphis officially announced his Top 8, trimming his list of 16 offers in half and eliminating teams as he moves forward in his recruitment.

In that top 8 is the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are hoping to land the dominant post player to add to their 2019 class.

The Tar Heels will have some tough competition in the race to land Wiseman as he also listed Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Texas, Memphis, and Florida State in his top 8. He eliminated Alabama, Clemson, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, Iowa, Oklahoma State and Missouri from his list.

While Kentucky and Memphis appear to be the favorites to land the talented center, UNC hasn’t made many headlines in connection to Wiseman. But just about a week ago, Wiseman revealed that the Tar Heels were still involved and have been in contact with him.

It doesn’t change the fact that the Wildcats and Tigers are still the favorites for the  Memphis native but it’s good news that UNC has been named to the top 8, giving them a chance.

UNC head coach Roy Williams would love to land Wiseman and get back that dominant post presence the Tar Heels once had with Kennedy Meeks, Isaiah Hicks and Tony Bradley before they left. He has Sterling Manley, Garrison Brooks and Brandon Huffman hoping to make strides in their sophomore seasons and if Wiseman did commit, he would likely come in and make an impact right away.

There’s no word on when Wiseman will commit but he is expected to take his official visits and one could be on UNC’s campus.
