Antonio Williams received some great news as he was ruled eligible for the 2018 season on Friday

The North Carolina Tar Heels football team will be adding another piece to its offense for the 2018 season.

Just weeks after running back Antonio Williams announced he was transferring to UNC from Ohio State, he and the program got good news. According to Inside Carolina, Williams was officially cleared by the NCAA and ruled eligible to play beginning in the 2018 season.

The New London, North Carolina native has two years of eligibility remaining and the Tar Heels applied for a waiver to bypass the transfer rule, which would have forced him to sit out for a season. Instead, UNC and Williams were granted the waiver and he’s now set to join what should be a strong backfield in 2018.

Williams reacted to the news via Twitter on Friday afternoon, posting this:

The running back appeared in 12 games for the Buckeyes in 2017, rushing for 290 yards on 57 carries and had 3 touchdowns. He never really found a role in Ohio State’s offense and decided it was best to transfer to UNC, a school that showed interest in him during his recruitment.

For UNC, adding a player like Williams this year is big.

With Jordon Brown and Michael Carter Jr. returning, Williams can add another dynamic to that backfield. He can come in and spell Brown or be that third down back, allowing Carter to be a factor as a receiver as well.

We won’t know exactly what to expect with the backfield situation until we get closer to the season but we should have an idea when training camp begins. UNC will release a depth chart sometime during the August training camp which should give us an early indication of what Fedora is planning to do.
