UNC in the NBA: Vince Carter signs new deal
By Zack Pearson
NBA veteran and former University of North Carolina Tar Heels Vince Carter is officially returning for another season.
He announced weeks ago that he wanted to return for another season, expressing interest as a free agent and now he’s made it official.
After spending a year in Sacramento, Carter will have a new home for the 2018-19 season and he’s heading back to the South. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Carter has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Wojnarowski tweeted out the news on Wednesday night:
The deal is for the veterans minimum at $2.4M according to Shams Charania, making it a low-risk signing for the Hawks.
The 41-year-old will enter his 21st season in the NBA and will do so with his eighth different team after being drafted by the Toronto Raptors in the 1998 NBA Draft. Carter has spent time with the Raptors, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Raptors, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and now the Hawks.
The guard will serve as a mentor for a Hawks team that is in a rebuilding phase and the veteran can provide plenty of experience for the youth on the roster. Atlanta acquired Trae Young in a draft day trade and also has John Collins,Kevin Huerter and Justin Anderson as building pieces on the roster. It’s very unlikely he will be a starter for Atlanta but rather have a role coming off the bench.
Carter averaged 5.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists for the Kings last season.
