UNC Basketball: Roy Williams showing interest in 2019 in-state guard
By Zack Pearson
University of North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams is showing some interest in a class of 2019 in-state point guard
July has been a very busy time for Roy Williams and his assistant coaches as the evaluation periods have re-opened up. Williams has been all over the country watching several recruits in the 2019 and 2020 classes.
While Williams and his staff have kept tabs on several targets, they have also shown some interest in new targets. One of those targets is in-state guard Caleb Mills.
The 2019 guard played with PSB Elite at the Phenom JMac Showcase last weekend and put on a show in front of several coaches. Williams and his staff watched Mills on July 21 according to Rivals’ reporter Dan McDonald.
UNC was just one of the teams watching Mills over the course of the tournament as coaches from Clemson, Marquette, Kansas State, VCU, East Carolina and Houston also took in some of Mills’ games at the event in Georgia.
The 6-foot-3 point guard out of Asheville Christian Academy High School in Swannanoa, North Carolina has really elevated his game of late. He scored 60 points in the first two games of the recent event and is now drawing some more interest from bigger schools.
Mills currently has 21 offers including from programs like Clemson, Florida State, Mississippi State, Auburn and Xavier. He does not have one from UNC just yet but with Williams showing interest, that’s great news for Mills’ chances.
The Tar Heels already have a talented guard in Jeremiah Francis who is verbally committed in the 2019 class. But that hasn’t stopped them from targeting other point guards. Williams and his staff have recently shown interest in other point guards including Cole Anthony, hoping to add to their backcourt in the class.
With the recent interest from UNC, Mills is a recruit to keep an eye on and see where things progress at. While he’s not a household name just yet in the rankings he could end up providing some much-needed depth at the position for the future.
