UNC in the NBA: Danny Green traded to Toronto Raptors
By Zack Pearson
Danny Green is on the move as he was dealt to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday morning
Former University of North Carolina standout Danny Green will have a new home in the NBA for the 2018-19 season and he’s going north of the border.
After weeks of speculation on whether or not the San Antonio Spurs would trade star Kawhi Leonard, it appears as if he’s on the move. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Spurs and Toronto Raptors have agreed on a package deal after talking for weeks about a potential trade.
The deal would send Leonard and Green to Toronto for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poetl and a protected 2019 first-round pick. After being reported early this morning, the two teams went on a trade call with the NBA to finalize it.
Green found out the news Wednesday morning and posted a message to Spurs fans via Twitter, thanking them for his time in San Antonio.
The guard has spent the past eight seasons with the Spurs after being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008. He helped the Spurs win the 2014 NBA Finals over the Miami Heat.
In 2013, Green was one of the standout players in the NBA Finals despite the Spurs losing to Miami. He broke an NBA Finals record for most three-pointers made and hit seven in one game for the Spurs.
Green is set to make $10M with the Raptors next season but will be a free agent in 2019. He will likely come off the bench as a sixth man for a Toronto team that finished first in the NBA’s Eastern Conference regular season last year but were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs.
